Having watched Thetford Town last night, I had a relatively free Saturday, so went hunting for a local Anglian Combination game to go to. A trip to Wymondham Town caught my eye as a ground I have not yet been too, so I hopped in the car and made the short trip up the A11, where thankfully the roadworks had finally come to an end! Upon getting to the ground, I was greeted with a nice club house with friendly staff, where I picked up a printed matchday programme, another excellent Barnes Print edition.
Opponents today were Caister, a team I remember seeing up the top of the Premier Division a couple of seasons back, so I was looking forward to seeing how they had adjusted to life in Division 1. It was a warm sunny day, and even though rain threatened, it thankfully never materialised. Wymondham Town lined up in red and black stripes, and Caister were in their away mint green shirts with grey shorts and socks.

1' - CA - GOAL (0-1) - With only 30 seconds on the clock, Caister bag themselves an early goal. They are awarded a free-kick, Ward takes it quickly and feed Trenerry, he takes it into the box, takes a good touch towards the middle of the penalty area, and with his body fully opened up he blasts the ball into the bottom left corner, a fine finish from the winger.
4' - CA - Ward crosses the ball into the box, Mansfield is open at the far post, but he cannot steer his free header towards goal and it flies over the crossbar.
7' - CA - From a long throw in, the ball is allowed to bounce in the box, where it fell to the somewhat surprised Mansfield, and with his body position wrong, his volleyed effort sails harmlessly over from close range.
11' - CA - Trenerry intercepts a loose defensive pass from Chigudu, he sprints forwards with the ball, cuts into the box and shoots at the near post, but keeper Sturman is able to stick out a leg to make the all important save. Moments later, Ward has an opportunity to score, but Sturman is able to get across and smother the ball.
12' - CA - Caister are awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position. Howell steps up to take it, and he hits a low, firm strike, but it is just wide of the post.
31' - CA - Wymondham battle back and create a few half-chances and fire in a couple of shots straight at the keeper. Caister weather this then begin to attack again, another long throw causes problems, the ball falls to Willetts, but his snap shot from inside the box is narrowly wide.
37' - CA - GOAL (0-2) - Caister finally get their second goal of the afternoon, some great battling work from Ward sees him maintain possession of the ball, he passes to captain Barnden who spots the run of Mansfield down the right wing and pings a perfect ball over the top for him, Mansfield takes it in and fires his shot across the keeper and into the net, a cool finish from the winger,
45' - WT - Just before the whistle, Wymondham have their best chance of the half, a corner ball is swung in by Elliott and Correira Silva rises highest, he gets some power behind the header, but it clatters into the post and out, so close, had this have gone in it would have given them a lift going into the break.
47' - CA - GOAL (0-3) - In a similar fashion to the first half Caister come out of the blocks fast, and soon enough they all but seal the win with their 3rd goal. Trenerry does some good work down the left and is able to find Roots in the box, and his pin-point strike travels beyond the reach of Sturman and into the side-netting.
49' - WT - Inside the box, Constable has a shot deflected, if falls into the path of Correira Silva and from the left-side of the box he takes a touch to control then blasts in a shot, but Huggins is fast to close down the space, jumps and spins in the air and makes the save with his backside!
53' - CA - GOAL (0-4) - Caister kill off the game with a fourth, and this one is the pick of the bunch. Trenerry again gets the better of his man down the left flank, cuts the ball back to Ward who was just outside the box and in a pocket of space, he looks at the goal, picks his spot, and curls the ball into the top right corner, top bins! Neat finish!
67' - INCIDENT - An off the ball inside the Caister box descends into a bit of handbags, which takes a few minutes to calm down.
89' - CA - GOAL (0-5) - Following the scuffle, the game goes flat for a bit, but towards the end Caister re-organise themselves and add the cherry on top. A nice 1-2 releases Roots down the wing, he crosses the ball into the box to find captain Barnden who gets in front of the defender, his effort looks to be in, but it hits the woodwork and falls to substitute Perfect. His first strike is blocked, but he gets a second bite and makes no mistake this time to bury the ball into the net.
90' - WT - GOAL (1-5) - Very soon after the restart, a ball into the box goes unchecked and finds Constable completely open, and he makes no mistake from close range to give Wymondham Town a consolation goal.
96' - WT - It is all Wymondham in the final moments, and they go close to grabbing a 2nd. Winger Elliott bursts down the left, evades the tackle, beats his man and drives into the box, he powers in a strike at the near post, but it is batted away by Huggins, and shortly after the final whistle is blown.
Another day, another high scoring game, that is now 2 x 5-1 games in 2 days! I was gutted for Wymondham Town as I hoping to see them do well, but the early Caister goal seemed to knock them for six, and they had to endure a difficult opening 15 minutes. They played themselves back into the game, but Caister utilised the wings well, and managed to get their 2nd before half-time. Another fast start from Caister in the 2nd half effectively killed off the tie, and the game did descend into a niggly, fractious affair, but it was nice to see Wymondham get a consolation at the death. Despite the result, I enjoyed my trip, I was impressed by the facilities at this level and I will certainly look to re-visit one day. I wish both teams all the best with their seasons, particularly Wymondham Town, I will be looking out for your results and hope to see you again soon.
