Final Score: Lakenheath 0-4 Bury Town
I wasn't initially planning to do two games on the bounce, but this tie was too good to pass-up, two teams I enjoy watching, who have never played against each other in a competitive fixture, being drawn together in the FA Cup - I had to be here. It was an intriguing tie, on paper Bury Town the clear favourites being the higher level team, however, Bury aren't on the best run of form generally and have been building a new squad which has not had time to gel yet. In contrast, Lakenheath are playing well, have a settled core to the team, play well at home, and have the talismanic striker Shaun Avis - so anything could have happened!
When I got to the ground, parking was tight, as I expected, but I found a space down a back road and headed to the ground. It was a shame to see that there were no programmes, however, it was great seeing The Nest so busy, there was a buzz about the place and the pitch was looking decent. Both teams were fielding strong line-ups so it was going to be a good game in the Summer sunshine.
KEY MOMENTS
LH = Lakenheath
BT = Bury Town
2' - LH - A long ball is punted up to the Bury box, goalkeeper Ridd somewhat misjudges the bounce and pacey striker Thurlborn competes for the ball and gets a touch, but Ridd manages to collect the ball.
3' - BT - A Bury corner, taken by Barker, is met by a towering header from defender Johnson, forcing a diving save from Beckwith.
39' - BT - GOAL (0-1) - From a Lakenheath corner, Bury break fast, the ball punted high up the field, Beckwith charges out of his box to make a headed clearance, but it falls to Maughn who continues his run and squares to Ramadan, and despite the shouts for offside, he fires a left-footed shot across the goal, beyond the back-peddling Beckwith, to bury the ball into the side netting to put Bury 1-0 at a crucial time.
45' + 2' - LH - A big goal kick is punted forward by Beckwith, Thurlborn again finds himself between the last defender and the goalkeeper and manages to chest the ball, but he loses control and the chance to shoot disappears.
55' - BT - Ramadan chases a forward ball down the right, the presence of Nydazayo in the centre opens up space so he cuts in and drives through towards the goal, flashing a shot from just outside the area narrowly wide of the far post.
61' - LH - On the edge of the Bury box, the ball falls nicely for Avis, but his snap half-volley is saved by Ridd.
62' - BT - GOAL (0-2) - Maughn slides the ball into Ramadan who makes a run into the box, again he performs his trademark cut-back to make some space and he slots the ball into the left side of the goal, just beyond the reach of Beckwith to put some distance between the two sides.
65' - BT - During an assault on the Lakenheath box by Bury, the ball drops outside of the box to O'Malley, who finding himself in some space blazes in a powerful strike that would have flew into the goal if it were not for a brilliant save from Beckwith, pushing the ball out and safe in the process.
68' - BT - GOAL (0-3) - A long ball is headed down to Nydazayo, he picks up the ball on the left, cuts towards the middle, takes a touch to beat a defender and on the turn swings his right boot to hit an unbelieveably powerful and accurate strike from 20 yards out, sailing into the top right of the goal and leaving Beckwith flailing at fresh air - a spectacular goal to effectively kill off the FA Cup tie.
79' - BT - Maughn intercepts a poor clearance at the edge of the box, but his weak strike is comfortably saved by Beckwith.
83' - BT - GOAL (0-4) - Maughn finally gets his well deserved goal, substitute Mills intercepts a poor defensive header, runs into the left of the box and squares the ball to Maughn, who completely open, calmly side-foots in to seal the win for Bury Town.
Despite the scoreline, that was actually a close well contested game, particularly for large parts of the first-half, with both teams looking resolute at the back. However, once Bury had broken the deadlock, it forced Lakenheath to attack more, and as the game went on, the better fitness and tactics of the higher league team won through, and they were particularly resilient at the back with chances for Lakenheath few and far between. Hopefully this is the start of another deep FA cup run for Bury Town, but commiserations to Lakenheath who will hopefully get a kinder tie next year so they can progress to the next round, this being only their second season in the FA Cup, and both times not progressing. I will be back to The Nest soon, it is one of my favourite non-league grounds for sure.
