Another mid-week fixture for Bury Town in the league as they took on North Essex's Brightlingsea Regent, a team which played Step 3 football last season. The Isthmian North looks incredibly tight this season, but with both teams having played 7, before the game, Brightlingsea were sitting 7th, with Bury Town in 13th, although there was only 4 points between them, so it was shaping up to be another tight and competitive game down at Ram Meadow, as well a chance for Bury to bounce back following their heavy away defeat to another Essex side, Heybridge Swifts.

Tonight's programme had Darren Mills celebrating his last gasp equaliser against Gorleston a couple of week ago, another great programme for £2.

It was a calm, dry yet chilly night, and with the dropping temperature there was a lot of condensation around to make the pitch damp, to hopefully set-up a good game of football. Bury Town came out in their home blue strip, with Brightlingsea Regent in a contemporary black and red striped kit.

KEY MOMENTS

BT = Bury Town

BR = Brightlingsea Regent

14' - BT - Brightlingsea dominate the early play, but Bury Town play their way back into it, and a shot from just outside the box on the left-hand side is lashed in by Yun, and it is deflected wide for a corner.

17' - BT - Bury continue to build the pressure, Maughn takes the ball down the right wing then squares it back to Upson just outside the box, he opens up his body and curls a ball towards the top left corner, but it travels just wide.

27' - BT - Bury Town are awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position after Ramadan is fouled as he powered in a shot from just outside the area. Upson steps up, and he tries yet again to curl the ball into the top left corner, but is again just wide of the mark, so close!

40' - BT - Maughn marauds down the right again, and lays the ball back to Ramadan inside the box, but he was just in front of the ball and unable to shoot, he battles to regain control, the ball is then shifted out to the left, and Horne powers in a low skimming shot from just outside the box which is deflected wide for yet another corner.

44' - BR - GOAL (0-1) - Against the run of play, Brightlingsea break the deadlock. A loose pass from captain Fenn is intercepted by Ogunrinde, he takes the ball to the edge of the box and fires off a powerful strike, which loops over keeper Cullum after a deflection from O'Malley's charge down, unlucky.

45'+3' - BR - GOAL (0-2) - Disaster strikes for Bury Town, and yet again, pressure at the back sees Fenn lose the ball, it is pounced on by Ogunrinde, and he makes no mistake to hit the back of the net. There was a hint of a possible offside in the build-up to this goal, but the officials allow the goal to stand.

53' - BR - The right-sided Brightlingsea winger (it was hard to see who as the gold number clashed with the crazy shirt pattern), bursts into the box, and lashes a strike at the near-post into the side-netting.

86' - BT - GOAL (1-2) - After a half of a lot of toil with no end results, Bury finally get their first goal. An Upson corner ball falls to Yun, who from close range, and through a sea of limbs, is able to fire the ball into the back of the net. Could another late comeback be on?

90' - BR - Brightlingsea get a free-kick in a dangerous position, the kick is well hit and the ball dips, but it skims just over the cross-bar.

All-in-all, a result that Bury Town will be left to rue, a game where they largely dominated and had the best of the play undone by two quick fire mistakes at the back from the captain, both dispatched clinically by Ogunrinde. It does have to be said that Bury struggled to break down the resolute Brightlingsea Regent defense, and despite chasing a 2-goal deficit were unable to create much in the 2nd half. I was particularly impressed with defender Zack Littlejohn who snuffed out attack-after-attack, and looked composed and calm when doing so. Bury Town need to eliminate these mistakes at the back if they are to stand any chance against higher level Billericay Town in the FA Trophy at the weekend, but here's to hoping that they can travel down to Essex to pull off a cup upset!
