Another Tuesday, another evening game at Ram Meadow, with Bury Town hosting another team travelling up from Essex, this time Basildon United who were sitting in the play-offs before kick-off. Bury Town have been having a stuttering start to the season, and have recently added a few new signings to help bolster Cole Skuse's team. A win today would see them win two on the trot, but they were up against a strong opponent.
On the front cover of this weeks £2 programme was Josh Curry, pictured on the ball during their 3-0 win against Witham Town on the weekend.
It was a chilly, yet calm and dry evening, with the earlier rain making the pitch damp and soft. Bury Town lined up in their home blue kit, with Basildon United in an away green and white stripped kit.
KEY MOMENTS
BT = Bury Town
BA = Basildon United
2’ – BT – Early pressure from Bury sees Maughn drive in a ball from the left wing, it travels into the danger area and none of the Bury attackers are able to prod the ball in, and it is knocked out by a Basildon defender for a corner.
8' - BT - GOAL (0-1) - The early pressure counts, a brilliant turn and shot in the box from Maughn winning Bury a corner. Upson whips in a pin-point ball for Josh Curry to power in with his head, great start.
10' - BT - Maughn making himself a nuisance in the early stages, another neat turn in the box creates space, he curls a ball in towards the far-post, but the onrushing de la Paz is millimeters away from getting his head on the end of it.
12' - BA - GOAL (1-1) - A swift attack from Basildon United, knocking the ball cleanly and confidently, Allen is played in the middle, he turns and sees the run of Samir Ali down the right wing and feeds the ball out to him, the pacey wingers takes the ball forward and from the edge of the box rifles a low shot in at the near post which wriggles under Beckwith and into the net, the Bury Town lead did not last long.
14' - BA - GOAL (1-2) - The right winger, Samir Ali, causing the Bury Town backline all sorts of problems, he blazes with the ball down the wing, cuts the ball back to Fitzer just inside the box, he takes a step to wrong foot the defender then powers his low drive under Beckwith.
15' - BA - GOAL (1-3) - Disaster for Bury Town as Basildon smash in a quick 3rd in only 3 minutes! Again, Samir Ali ripping things up down the right, he whips a ball into the far post, Semazzi picks it up and shoots, Beckwith is able to palm the ball away but it falls to Allen who makes no mistake with the follow-up.
22' - BA - GOAL (1-4) - What on earth is going on at Ram Meadow, as Bury concede a 4th in the 22nd minute! From a throw-in, the ball is passed forwards quickly, the last of which sees Machado find Fitzer on the edge of the box, he turns and shoots, his strike across the face of goal beating Beckwith and nestling into the bottom left corner like an arrow, what a hit!
31' - BA - GOAL (1-5) - Basildon are rampant and score a blinder of a 5th goal. That man again, Samir Ali, he chests down a bouncing ball and volleys it in from 25 yards, the ball dipping and crashing in off the underside of the crossbar, giving Beckwith no chance, what a clean strike, no arguments there.
38' - BT - Bury Town fight back to try and restore some pride. Upson finds Yun in the box after a well timed run from the substitute, he fires in a strike at the near post, but it is turned away by Marsh for a corner. The subsequent corner ball is curled in by Upson, there looks to be a relatively clear handball in the box from a Basildon player, but it missed by the referee and linesman, much to the frustration of the Bury fans and players.
41' - BT - GOAL (2-5) - Bury pull back a goal, the catalyst is again Maughn, some neat and tricky work in the box from him and he fires the ball low into the danger area, it is prodded towards goal and blocked, with Mayhew turning in the loose ball from close range.
66' - BT - With the substitutes and change in formation, Bury are performing better in the second half, but Basildon United set-up strongly at the back. The first decent chance comes when Yun battles down the right, he cuts the ball back into the box, where Ramadan turns and shoots, his snapped curving shot at the near post forcing a good save from Marsh.
69' - BT - Jolland pings the ball down the right to release Ramadan, he beats his man and squares the ball across, Mayhew is there at the near-post, but somehow manages to bundle the ball wide of the post, missed opportunity.
77' - BA - Basildon nearly get their 6th, a free-kick from Semazzi is well struck and heading into the top right corner, but Beckwith leaps across to push the ball out for a corner.
80' - BT - Bury try desperately to pull back another goal, Luke Brown has a go from 20 yards, his effort is well struck and heading into the bottom-left corner, but Marsh makes a brilliant dive to scoop the ball away, with the follow-up blasted over, it was going to be one of those nights.
85' - BA - GOAL (2-6) - Basildon do get their 6th, a poor pass at the back from captain Ollie Fenn is intercepted by substitute Brogan, he immediately squares to fellow sub Bareck who strides with the ball into the box and neatly tucks it into the bottom right corner, calamitous from Bury Town.
91' - BT - Bury search for a late consolation goal, Yun picks up a loose ball in the box, takes a touch and drives in a strike, but Marsh is yet again equal to it, getting down well to make another stop.
A poor result for Bury Town, but after a strong start, a mad 10 minutes where they fell apart, torn assunder by the Basildon attacking line who were clinical and ruthless, and were able to knock Bury for 6. In that crazy ten minutes, winger Samir Ali ran Bury ragged, and if it was not for a change in personnel and formation, we could easily have been looking at double-figures. However, fair play for Bury for not giving up, they kept going and looked to claw back some goals, and I thought that Ollie Yun looked strong when on, he was unlucky not to bag a goal, and were it not for some heroics from the Basildon United keeper George Marsh, the second half could have looked a bit closer. Overall, Bury Town competed well in the midfield, and had moments when attacking, but they need to look at their defensive performance, certainly an area to improve. I hope to be back soon when the fixtures allow, in the meantime I hope Bury Town can turn things around sooner rather than later, fingers crossed!
