This game was held in memory of John Marston, who was highly influential in the growth of Mundford FC and it's cricket club, a much loved character and excellent groundsman who is truly missed having passed away last year. This cup will be held annually in his honour, this match being the first of many.
The Mundford line-up included some familiar faces such as Jordan Cantwell and Telmo Rocha, as well as two players who played for Thetford Town last season, Johnny Conroy and Mihail Prosputins. On the other side of the pitch, Feltwell United, who play at a lower level than Mundford, were playing their first pre-season game.
Throughout much of the first half, Mundford were in the ascendancy, with No. 11 coming close 10 minutes into the game, a great through-ball from Cantwell setting up a one-on-one, which was going in were it not for an excellent save from the Feltwell keeper. Cantwell crossed the ball in for another chance on the 22nd minute, the header from the No. 9 (believed to be Joe Allen) going just over the bar. On the 25th minute, Mundford again came close to the opener, a good ball crossed in from Allen to the near post, the header from the No. 11 being stopped by the keeper and out for a corner.
However, all of Mundfords pressure paid off, with the opener coming in the 26th minute, Telmo Rocha battling and winning the ball just outside the area, then passing through to No. 11 who slotted neatly home. Mundford came close to a second goal shortly afterwards in the 33rd minute, a snap shot from Cantwell from just outside the area hitting the crossbar, helped on by the Feltwell goalkeeper who just managed to get the faintest of touches.
Towards the end of the 2nd half, Feltwell United had a strong 5 minute, coming close on the 41st minute, a cross into the box from No.7 finding No. 11, but a tame effort made it an easy save. In the 44th minute, Feltwell had their best chance of the game, a through ball by No. 9 to No. 17 leaving him 1-on-1 with the keeper, which was well-saved.
In the 2nd half, Mundford had approximately 85% of the territory and action, but were unable to make all their dominant play translate into good chances and goals. In the 64th minute, Prosputins came close when heading towards goal from a corner, and on the 72nd minute Allen almost put Cantwell past the goalkeeper, with the Feltwell keeper reacting slightly quicker to claim the ball.
Towards the end of the game, despite the substitutions, Mundford continued to press and came close to having a 2 goal advantage in the 87th minute when Telmo Rocha hit the crossbar which subsequently bounced down close to the line, but the referee deemed that it did not cross the line. If only non-league football had goal line technology.....On the 90th minute, No. 7 put Cantwell through on goal, and managed to fire off a good shot which was acrobatically pushed into the post and out from the Feltwell keeper, the best save of the day of many.
All-in-all, Mundford played really well, dominating possession and creating enough chances to win the game by 3 goals were it not for the heroics of the Feltwell goalkeeper, Spencer, who was undoubtedly man-of-the-match. Feltwell gave a great account of themselves and should take pride in their brilliantly organised defensive performance against wave after wave of attacks. After the post-match talks, Mundford proudly raised the John Marston Memorial trophy, with the crowd and players alike showing their appreciation for the hard work John put in to the club.
I hope to next be up The Glebe 17th August for the game against newly promoted Heacham. Should be a good game. UP THE STAGS!!
