Another Tuesday night trip to Diss Town was on the cards, this time to watch them in the first round of the Challenge Cup as they hosted newly promoted Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers from the Anglian Combination. During the pre-season game against Thetford Town, Diss Town looked a good side, however, the first two results of the season were rather unexpected as they took two heavy defeats against AFC Sudbury Reserves and Framlingham Town. Thankfully, they managed to turn things around against Stanway Pegasus on the weekend to bag their first 3-points of the season, and to boost confidence coming into this cup fixture. On the other hand, Dussy Rovers have only played 1 game so far, a home win against Norwich CBS who slumped to their third straight defeat of the season. At this stage, it is hard to gauge how both teams are performing, so I was looking forward to see how both sides fared tonight.
On the way in to the ground I picked up a match day programme for £2, grabbed one of the incredible cheeseburgers and had a read through the detailed programme created on www.matchday-programmes.co.uk, was a thoroughly good read.
It was a calm and still evening, but as the sun set it became a bit chilly, but excellent conditions for some Tuesday night football. Diss Town lined-up in their traditional tangerine orange, with Dussy Rovers in a maroon/purple strip.
KEY MOMENTS
DT = Diss Town
D&H = Dussindale & Hellesdon Rovers
25' - D&H - GOAL (0-1) - After an even start to the game, Dussy Rover break the deadlock from nowhere, a long deep ball is pinged forwards by winger Taylor, Durrant is able to easily beat the offside trap against a static defence, and manages to pip keeper Ben Self to the ball, getting his head on to the ball and past the keeper for it to roll calmly into the net.
42' - DT - PENALTY - Harvey Norman whips a ball into the box from the left wing, it is headed back across goal towards Baker, but a Dussindale player handles the ball and the referee immediately points to the penalty spot.
43' - DT - GOAL (1-1) - Captain Baker steps up to take the penalty, and he dispatches the kick with minimal effort straight into the top right corner, never in doubt, and an important goal for Diss just before the break.
63' - D&H - The 2nd half begins with both team evenly matched again, with neither able to breakthrough. That is until Cullumbine intercepts a ball deep in Diss territory, he takes it forwards and flashes in a strike across the face of goal, just wide of the far post.
66' - D&H - Striker Durrant deftly nods a high ball through to release the No.16, he is through on goal, but Self is out quickly to get contact on the ball, pushing it out for a corner.
67' - D&H - GOAL (1-2) - The corner is whipped into the danger area, skimming the head of an attacker, but it falls to Harry Blossom at the far post who half-volleys the ball in, beating the keeper at his post from close range.
72' - DT - GOAL (2-2) - Diss respond quickly, some great play from striker Webb sees him control the ball out to the right wing to release substitute Yates, his first touch is brilliant, allowing him to get the drop on the defender and run into the box, and he follows this up with a clean precise strike across keeper Kieran Brooks that rifles into the inside of the side netting, what a finish!
73' - D&H - Dussy Rovers almost immediately follow up with a third goal, a goal kick is punted up to the right wing, Cullumbine picks it up, breaks down the wing and flashes a dangerous ball across the box which should have been turned in by Durrant, but somehow he failed to make contact with the ball, big let off for Diss.
75' - D&H - Dussy Rovers continue to apply a lot of pressure on the goal, an attack on the box resulting in three fierce strikes, all blocked by the scrambling Diss defence.
79' - D&H - PENALTY - Another long ball punted up by keeper Kieran Brooks causes Diss all sorts of trouble at the back, Cullumbine looks to be through, but before he can shoot he is shoved off the ball inside the box, and the referee points to the spot for the second penalty of the day.
80' - D&H - Winger Jimmy Taylor steps up to take the penalty, he hits it hard, aiming for the top left corner, but it is slightly misjudged, slamming into the crossbar and out, another big let off for Diss.
95' - D&H - GOAL (2-3) - Diss Town have chances to score a late goal, and indeed put the ball into the net from an offside position, but it is Dussy Rovers who manage to achieve a legal goal deep in stoppage time. A corner ball is whipped in, substitute Sam Brooks is open and he guides his free-header into the goal to secure the victory for Dussy Rovers.
What started a tight contest between two evenly matched teams turned into a frantic end-to-end game from the hour mark, the last 30mins was full of entertainment with tit-for-tat goals, a missed penalty, seemingly a last minute winner for Diss that was ruled offside, followed by an actual last minute winner for Dussy Rovers, games at Brewers Green Lane are never dull! Diss Town fought hard all game, and certainly put the work in, but overall I though Dussy Rovers edged this one and were good for their win, looking more incisive when attacking. Diss Town have a lot of positives to build on for the league, and newly promoted Dussy Rovers go through to the next round of the league cup, I wish them all the best. I hope to be back at Diss Town soon, and in the meantime I wish to see them bag some big results.
