An almost unrecognisable Mundford team, due to a combination of missing players and transfers, faced off again Ely City, a team also missing a number of players due to Covid, in the first game hosted at The Glebe since Dec 2020 (at least to the authors knowledge). The pitch and facilities were looking in fantastic condition, if you ever get the opportunity to visit The Glebe, I do thoroughly recommend it.
After a relatively cagey 1st half, with a few speculative shots on target from both sides, after the restart, Ely City came out of the blocks quickly to score twice in the first 7 minutes of the half. The first came from a corner, and the second was a good break from the winger, crossing into the box for the striker to slot it home. Ely City continued to press and should have scored a third, but Mundford stood firm with some last ditch tackles and saves.
Ely City made a few changes that allowed Mundford to grow into the game a snap shot from the No. 9 forcing a good save from the keeper. Mundford continued to press and eventually got their goal. Mundford tried to press for a 2nd, but were ultimately unable to find the net, and the attacks eventually petered out as the game drew to a close.
Overall, a good competitive pre-season friendly and a good run out for the much changed Mundford team against higher level opposition. Despite missing several key players, there were a lot of promising performances across the pitch and I hope that the team can begin to gel before the start of the season. Best of luck with the rest of the pre-season friendlies, and I hope to be back up The Glebe at the start of the season. UP THE STAGS!!
