This Suffolk Premier Cup fixture was scheduled a few weeks earlier, but a mid-week FA Cup replay for the visitors meant that the game had to be re-scheduled to today. This is a much anticipated game pitting two of the better teams in the competition against each other in the First Round. Whilst the teams are separated by a division, Bury Town are near the top of their league and only just having a brilliant winning run broken on the weekend as they were defeated 2-0 by Waltham Abbey. The visitors are having a more middling season, sitting 14th in their respective league, so in reality only a few places actually separated the teams, setting up an exciting spectacle under the floodlights at the glorious Ram Meadow.
This evenings programme was another classic full-colour detailed special, a great read for only £2, always excellent programmes at Bury Town.
It was a mild evening, and with on-off showers all day, the pitch looked zippy and fast. Onto the well manicured pitch, Bury Town lined up in their classic blue kits, with Leiston in their away yellow kit.
KEY MOMENTS
BT = Bury Town
LE = Leiston
7' - BT - Davis corner swung in to the far-side, White is on the end of it and guides his header down, but it bounces in front of keeper Johnson and he is able to secure it.
9' - LE - Ball at the back intercepted by Harley Curtis, ball goes loose but rolls out to Fatadjo who snaps in a strike, it looks to be heading inside the post but Beckwith is across well to push it out for a corner.
28' - LE - Dangerous strike across goal is lashed in by Harley Curtis from 20yrds out, but Beckwith makes a diving save to turn the ball wide of the goal.
36' - LE - Leiston dispossess Bury deep in their half, Harley Curtis is in but drags his effort wide of the target.
37' - LE - Fowkes, coming in off the right, has a go from a relatively narrow angle, it is arrowing into the bottom corner but Beckwith gets down quickly to push the ball wide with his fingertips, another fine stop from the Bury Town keeper.
46' - LE - Fast start to the 2nd half by the visitors, Batho gets in a deep position down the left and crosses the ball into the danger area, Fatadjo is on the end but his side-footed volley blazes over the bar.
49' - LE - Corner ball played to Harley Curtis, with his back to goal he flicks a looping ball in with the back of his heel, it has Beckwith defeated but crashes into the bar and out, would have been one hell of a goal it had gone in!
72' - LE - Fowkes on the left drives a fast low ball into the box, Harley Curtis is on the end of it but closely marshalled by a Bury Town defender and he is unable to keep his effort on target.
72' - BT - Bury immediately go up the other end, substitute Upson breaks a couple of tackles in the middle and this allows him to drive forwards, he shuffles the ball out to Davis open on the left, he cuts insides and tries to curl the ball into the top right corner, but keeper Johnson pulls off an acrobatic dive to direct the ball onto the crossbar with his fingertip, certainly a day of fine saves from both keepers!
82' - BT - Davis has space on the left again, he drills in a cross-goal effort but it is narrowly wide of the far-post and just beyond the reach of the supporting attackers.
88' - LE - GOAL (0-1) - Leiston finally get the breakthrough, some neat play down the right sets Fatadjo free, he swerves the ball into the danger area where Fowkes is on hand to turn the ball into the net from close range, it has to be said a goal like that had been threatened all game.
91' - BT - Davis whips is a cross from a deep position off the left flank, Ramadan is on the end of it but Johsnon gets down well to stop the goalbound effort.
94' - BT - Multiple corners for Bury Town which includes a strong penalty shout, best effort comes as the ball is cleared off the line, it bobbles about the box and breaks to Luke Brown on the right side of the box, with the near side undefended and open he powers in an effort, it looks in but Johnson dives out of nowhere to bat the ball wide. From the next corner, Upson charges in and directs a header towards goal, but Johnson is able to pull off a reaction save to tip the ball onto the crossbar and out, incredible double save to secure the win for the visitors!
An enjoyable and battling game served up this evening at Ram Meadow, Leiston dominated for large portions but Bury Town had chances towards the end of the 2nd half and were desperately lucky not to hit the back of the net to tie the game. This match became a tale of two excellent keepers, Charlie Beckwith and Billy Johnson, who both pulled off multiple diving saves to restrict the game to a 0-0 draw until Fatadjo and Fowkes linked up well to break the deadlock, the goal always looked to be coming from a ball crossed into the box. Bury Town put everything on the line and it nearly paid off, but in the end Leiston had that little bit extra to send them through into the 2nd Round of the Suffolk Premier Cup, where they will face fellow Step 3 outfit Lowestoft Town, in what should be another fiercely competitive cup game! Bury Town should take pride in their performance, they weathered multiple attacks and as the game wore on started to carve out the better chances against higher level opposition, bringing on Ed Upson certainly had a big impact. This year, the clear focus is on the league, so on the plus side they can focus all efforts on reaching Step 3, I will be watching keenly and hoping Bury Town can launch another undefeated run in their bid for promotion!
