Final Score: Diss Town 2-1 Framlingham Town

With no Thetford Town games tonight, I decided to go see Diss Town as I had not been to see them yet this season. They were taking on a high-flying Framlingham Town side who were 2 points off the top spot with 3 games in hand, and with a goal difference of +20 after only 9 games. Indeed, Diss and Framlingham have already met this season, with Diss being dismantled 6-1 at Badingham Road. However, Diss' performances have improved as the season has progressed, including a victory over Step 5 Histon in the FA Vase, so I was hoping for a more competitive game.

As ever, I picked up a programme, it was £2, but it is a really nice all colour glossy programme with Tom Baird on the cover, printed by www.matchday-programmes.co.uk, definitely worth the extra.

I also grabbed one of the fantastic cheeseburgers, supplied by local butchers Cannell's, a high quality burger indeed, and a bargain at £3.20! I got into position and both teams came out in their home colours, Diss Town in orange, and Framlingham Town in green and white hoops, made famous by a certain Framlingham local, Ed Sheeran.

KEY MOMENTS

DT = Diss Town

FR = Framlingham Town

4' - DT - GOAL (1-0) - During a Diss attack, the ball falls to Baker on the edge of the box, he is closed down quickly so cannot shoot so shuffles the ball to Baird, who darts into the box and is taken out, the referee making no hesitation to point to the spot. The fouled party, Baird, steps up and smashes the ball into the net to give Diss the early lead.

5' - DT - Baker feeds Cawcutt on the left, whose shot across the face is goal goes wide, from my position it looked and sounded like keeper Cummings got a touch on the ball, but it was given as a goal kick.

18' - FR - A free-kick is sent into the box, it is headed from the far post back into the danger area and during a scramble is sent goal-bound, only to be hooked off the line by a defender.

20' - DT - An in-swinging corner from Keeley is met at the near-post by Baird, his header going narrowly wide.

24' - FR - Ling attempts an audacious 25-yard strike, at first it seemed innocuous, but it was looping dangerously in and required keeper Curl to dive to collect the ball.

30' - FR - Framlingham break quickly and look to feed striker Willett, but keeper Curl is off the line quickly and gets his body to the ball first to cut out the attack.

32' - FR - From a high ball in the box, Willett comes off best, he attempts to side foot volley the ball in, but the connection is poor, although it is crawling in, but before it can cross the line it is cleared by a defender.

34' - FR - A ball punted forwards ricochets off a Diss head and falls perfectly for Willett, he has a bit of space and attempts a long range strike which is deflected wide for a corner.

42' - FR - A free-kick in a dangerous central position is taken by Willett, it dips low towards the left bottom corner, forcing a diving save from Curl, winger Hambling drives the ball back into the box, and following a scramble it looks like the ball is yet again blocked on or close to the line, the Diss goal living a charmed life.

47' - FR - Framlingham get out of the blocks quickly in the 2nd half, a cross/shot from winger Ling is touched on by Exworth, but he cannot guide it on target and it goes narrowly wide.

51' - FR - GOAL (1-1) - During a swift attack, the ball is squared to Exworth, as he is about to pull the trigger he is brought down, it looked like it could have been a penalty, but the play continued and the ball rolled on to Tysoe who steered itinto the goal to bring Framlingham level.

56' - FR - Framlingham attack down the left wing and square a ball into the box, the weak clearance falls to Ling on the edge of the box, he hits a low thunderbolt of a shot, but keeper Curl gets an outstretched leg to the ball, turning it over the bar for a corner, a brilliant save to keep Diss in the game, and a pivotal moment in the game.

65' - DT - Diss begin to get more of the ball, and during a sustained attack, striker Baker powers in a shot at the near post from a narrow angle, forcing a corner.

71' - DT - SIN BIN - A bad challenge goes unpunished causing the Diss players to react, and during the commotion, defender Edwards is sent to the sin bin for 10 minutes for dissent.

80' - DT - A quick break sees captain Ben Jones switch the ball across to Sillet, coming in unmarked from the left wing, he finishes well but the offside flag is up.

89' - DT - GOAL (2-1) - Baird steals the ball in a dangerous position and threads the ball through to Cawcutt coming in from the right, he takes a couple of touches as he makes his way into the box, and strikes across the keeper to nestle the ball in the bottom far corner of the goal, to restore Diss' lead at the death, a very composed finish.

94' - DT - RED CARD? - At the end, the game descends into chaos, and in amongst this there is a bit of argy bargy and the cards start getting handed out like confetti, and in amongst this, I think Baird gets a red card, or at the very least a sin binning, either way, he is off for the remainder of injury time.

95' - DT - RED CARD - During the chaos, the Diss manager receives a second yellow for back-chatting (the first one earlier in the game seemed really soft to me), and is sent to the changing rooms.

I don't often comment on the referees as I see them as vital to the grassroots game, but it would be remiss not to mention the poor performance tonight. As the game went on, it was ruined by a barrage of incorrect and baffling decisions which ultimately turned it into a scrappy affair. Luckily for Diss Town, this somewhat played into their hands as Framlingham Town look to be a team who break quickly and build up momentum behind their play, and they never really seemed to get going, particularly as the game descended into a farce. In any case, it is a big win for the Tangies, beating arguably the best team in the league, and getting vengeance for a 6-1 defeat at the start of the season in Suffolk. They fought hard all game and took their chances when they came, and finished the stronger side it has to be said, even when going down to 10 men for ten minutes. The 3 points puts Diss into the play-offs and I hope that they can maintain this to have a successful season, so I wish them all the best, and I hope to return soon, I always enjoy my trips down the A1066.
