Final Score: Diss Town 2-2 Framlingham Town

Having missed Diss Town's cup tie last week due to illness, I was glad to see that they had another Tuesday night fixture so soon. Today's opponents are a high flying Framlingham Town, currently battling with Great Yarmouth Town for the coveted top spot, and the automatic promotion to Step 5 that comes with it, with the team in second having to face the lottery of the play-offs. I actually went to this same fixture last season, where a struggling Diss Town pulled off a memorable 2-1 victory against what was an on-form Framlingham side. With Diss Town on the verge of the play-offs, recently knocking Step 5 promotion chasing Thetford Town out of the Norfolk Cup, and going toe-to-toe with Step 4 Gorleston last week, another big result could be on the cards.

On the way in I picked up one of the £2 full colour programmes on offer, a great programme with lots of stats within.

It was a still, dry and calm evening, with a bit of a chill in the air. Diss Town lined up in their famous tangerine strip, with Framlingham Town in their home green and white hoops.

KEY MOMENTS

DT = Diss Town

FR = Framlingham Town

3' - FR - Exworth attacks down the right and shoots, his shot is blocked but drops back to him, this time he chips the ball in towards the far post, Shopov sprints onto it and fires in a strike at the near-post, where it is turned around the post by keeper Ben Self for a corner.

8' - DT - From a long throw-in, there is chaos in the box, the balls eventually finds Ben Blyth who cracks in a strike, it is heading wide but captain Baker stretches out his leg to divert the ball and it strikes the post and out before it is cleared by the Framlingham defence, close!

25' - FR - Willett pounces on a loose back pass, he tries to round Ben Self, but the keeper gets an important touch on the ball to push it out of his path and allow the scrambling Diss defence to clear, great keeping!

28' - FR - A cross is pumped into the box, Willett swings and misses then pulls the ball back for captain Kerridge who blazes over from just inside the box.

35' - FR - GOAL (0-1) - Freeman sets Whittingstall free down the right wing, he squares the ball in, Diss defender Erith wins the balls but wants too much time on it, he is dispossessed and goal poacher Willett fires across Ben Self to hit the ball in off the far post, an easily preventable goal for Diss.

51' - FR - GOAL (0-2) - Winger Shopov strikes down the left, his turn of pace beating his man, he squares the ball in, Exworth controls the ball at the near post and hooks it back to Willett in the centre who poke-volleys the ball in from close range, never going to miss from there!

59' - DT - GOAL (1-2) - James Blyth hooks an unconventional ball into the box from long range, much like a golf-iron swing, striker Charlie Webb sprints in and beats keeper Cummings to the ball to head it in from close range, game on!

70' - DT - GOAL (2-2) - From a long throw-in, Baker does well to control the ball, Wilson helps the ball into the middle, it evades everyone to find substitute Ollie Williams coming in off the wing and he powers his laces through the ball to blast it into the net, completing Diss' comeback, brilliant finish.

87' - DT - Hogston finds substitute Middleton in the box, he turns and shoots, his shot deflected just wide.

93' - DT - From a long throw, Webb flicks the ball on with his head, Ollie Williams is open and heads the ball towards goal and is only denied his second of the game by an acrobatic save from Cummings, to keep Framlingham in the game.

What a fun end-to-end game, both games went at each other throughout, and despite Framlingham Town taking a 2-goal lead, Diss never gave up and were the better team for the final half an hour. They weren't satisfied with the point, and if the game went on any longer they would have been the team who secured the win, but ultimately they ran out of time. My player of the match was James Blyth, he was everywhere, cutting out attacks and setting up attacking moves, and it was his audacious ball in which led to Diss Town's opener. For Framlingham, Willett showed why is the leagues top scorer, with two well taken opportunistic goals, and the wingers Shopov and Whittingstall were impressive throughout the game. In reality, the draw probably favoured neither team, with Framlingham now 3-points adrift of Great Yarmouth, and Diss Town not breaking into the play-offs despite playing more games than their rivals. With only a few games left to go, I hope Diss can go on one final run, and achieve their goal of the play-offs!
