Half-time score: Great Yarmouth Town 0-0 Thetford Town
Final Score: Great Yarmouth Town 0-0 Thetford Town
Following Thetford Town's heavy away defeat on Saturday they faced another tough away game as they travelled to the coast to play Great Yarmouth Town, rescheduled due to an earlier fixture clash. A lot of improvement was needed, and with Great Yarmouth having beaten Thetford Town 3-1 at Mundford Road earlier in the season, there was a score to settle. With Great Yarmouth Town having struggled since a blistering start to the season, and with Thetford Town trying to rekindle their previously explosive form, it was an important game for both teams!
Printed programmes were on offer at the turnstile, so of course I picked one up for £2. Full colour and lots of content, very nice.
It started out a dry and mild evening under the floodlights, but finished with a persistent light rain. Despite the recent wet weather, the pitch looked in good shape. Onto the field, both teams lined up in front of the world's oldest football stand, with the hosts in amber and black, and Thetford Town in their away mint green kit.
KEY MOMENTS
GYT = Great Yarmouth Town
TT = Thetford Town
4' - TT - Thetford attack down the right, ball crossed into the danger area by Gilchrist, makeshift striker and Thetford Town captain Elliot Smith stoops low at the far post to head the ball towards goal, but keeper Ling is out quickly to close the space and make the stop.
10' - TT - From a Thetford corner, the ball drops to Wells at the edge of the box, he steps sidewards to wrong-foot the defender before powering in a shot which is blocked, it spins up and Olpin tries to volley in from a tricky position but is unable to get a clean connection.
16' - TT - Buttle has a go from the edge of the box, its a curling effort and loops just wide of the target, it looked like there was a deflection on the effort but the referee awards a goal-kick.
18' - GYT - From a Great Yarmouth corner, a couple of quick-fire headed efforts come in at the near-post, but Dickerson is equal to these and commandingly secures the ball.
36' - GYT - Great Yarmouth break down the right, the ball is squared to Barber who is open on the edge of the box, it looks a sure fire goal but Dickerson closes down the space quickly before making a superb save to prevent the hosts taking the lead.
43' - TT - Corner taken by Laker, he whips it in at the near-post and there is so much bend on it that it blasts into the near-post and out, worrying Yarmouth keeper Ling for a moment!
54' - GYT - Poor pass at the back is intercepted by Barber, he strides forwards and from the edge of the box rifles in a low strike towards the bottom left corner, but Dickerson gets down well to make the save.
66' - GYT - From a Great Yarmouth corner, Adams heads the ball at the far-post, it slams into the base of the post and out, Yarmouth follow up and shoot but the effort is cleared off the line, Thetford living dangerously!
67' - GYT - Shortly after the corner, Yarmouth break down the left, Barber is in and he drives in a shot at the near-post, forcing Dickerson to make another fine stop.
83' - GYT - Great Yarmouth find substitute Lemos open on the right flank, he takes the ball in and shoots, his effort doesn't have enough on it which allows Dickerson to smother the ball.
96' - TT - In the final moments Thetford counter down the right through substitute Harvey Lott, he finds Grove in the box who instead of shooting squares to Gilchrist, he takes a touch to send the covering defenders the wrong way, the space opens up for him, the goal is begging, but his effort is fired straight at Ling, and seconds later the final whistle goes.
Wow, what a finale, Thetford Town almost stole an undeserved victory, the second Dan Gilchrist had dummied the defenders I was expecting the net to ripple as he is such a consummate finisher, but unfortunately his effort was at the keeper who held onto the ball well in the rain. Truth be told, it would have been a smash-and-grab, with a draw not a bad result in the end. Thetford came out of the blocks fast and were on-top, but the hosts grew as the game went on, before having a dominant 2nd half where they really should have scored. So all-in-all, a point gained for Thetford Town with an improved performance compared to Saturday, capped off by a stellar performance from keeper Ryan Dickerson who made a slew of fantastic saves to claim a hard-earned clean sheet and secure a valuable point for the team. Great Yarmouth worked hard tonight and I was impressed by the Great Yarmouth Town forward Charlie Barber, he made some nice touches and was a constant nuisance, being unlucky not to score. Overall Great Yarmouth Town are a great club, with a decent bar and tea hut, a magnificent stand and a good crowd, I wish them all the best for the rest of their season. For Thetford Town, they now have a fortnight to rest, and they will need it because once they are back the games come thick-and-fast, and with everything still to play for we need to turn it on as the season gets to the sharp end, see you all at Dereham, UP THE TOWN!!!
